Shedding 101
Let’s talk about hair shedding. Although hair shedding can seem alarming at first, it’s completely normal. On average, you lose up to 100 hair follicles a day. So stop stressing when you notice hair in your comb after styling. You’re only making it worse.
However, shedding is not normal if you notice handfuls of hair loss. I’m talking about gently running your fingers through your hair and having a palm-full of hair. If you’re experiencing that, we need to talk, sis’. Massive hair shedding can be due to multiple reasons. Some include stress, environment, harsh products (hair products that have alcohol as the first ingredient) health, medications, and lack of minding your business. Here are a few ways to improve shedding.
Avoid heat damage
The first sign of hair shedding besides the hair being all over the bathroom is the loss of volume/fullness of your hair. If you notice hair that’s beginning to thin, it may be time to switch up your style and lay low on the flat irons. Realistically you should not be adding heat to your hair each day. If you are flat ironing your hair often, make sure you protect your hair with a heat protectant to avoid direct damage to the follicle. The best way to minimize shedding due to heat damage is by trying a protective style. The beauty in our hair is that we have so many options for a slay. Braid it, weave it, twist it. The possibilities are limitless.
Change your diet
Contrary to popular belief, you are what you eat. Just like you take time to water your plants, it’s essential to nourish your body with the proper necessities as well. A huge indicator of shedding can be dry and brittle hair. Although dry and brittle hair typically means your hair needs more moisture, it can also be because you’re dehydrated. Increasing your water, fruit, and veggie intake can improve so many problems in your life, from energy, skin, and, most importantly, hair.
Let your hair breath
We all experience bad hair days, but hiding your hair behind a hat or scarf all day is the reason you’re not receiving the results you want. To prevent shedding, your scalp needs the proper nutrients and a major one is oxygen. So instead of hiding your hair, learn to have fun with your hair and embrace it.
Try these three tips and you should notice a difference in the amount of shedding within 1-2 weeks. Thinking about trying a new style to combat the shedding?
